The largest packing item produced in any volume, that is biodegradable (and can also be recycled) is the majority of cardboard and paper used as packaging materials. It appears that this will continue to be the leading biodegradable packaging material, until further advances are made in developing materials from organic compounds.

Some plastics currently in use as packing materials, such as polyethylene are biodegradable, but can take some time to begin to do so once buried in a landfill site. Eventually it is hoped that all such plastic packing will be replaced with packing developed from organic materials.
