Bumba-meu-boi (Sao Luis): This is a fascinating folk festival centered around the story of the death and resurrection of a bull. It began at the end of the 18th century in northeastern Brazil. The parade of humans, animal characters, and creatures from Brazilian Indian mythology dance to the sounds of music while singing. The festivities take place over several months as there are several parts to the story. Contact the Sao Luis Tourist Office for details.
